美國的 School age 從 Kindergarten 開始,
小孩上 Kindergarten 就像台灣小孩上小學一年級般正式.
Kindergarten 的這一年,我們的小男孩慢慢長大了.
小男孩漸漸習慣每天固定的課程作息,每天八點半從 journal time 開始,
followed by Language Arts, Spanish, Math lessons.
中午在室外的午餐桌上與 Pre-K 的小朋友一起吃飯.
飯後開始音樂課和戲劇表演課,每週有三天體育課.三點鐘放學.
每天有一到兩頁的功課,通常是 math problems.
下學期開始每兩週一次的拼字測驗.
學校每一個新的動作,身為媽媽的我都迷惘了一陣. homework? at age 5? spelling test? at age 5?
當時最難適應的也許是我的心態,小男孩 seems to cruise along pretty well.
儘管對小朋友這麼早開始拼字測驗有些不願意,我們仍然敎他如何預備考試.
到了最後幾次的考試他對準備方式已有足夠的經驗,
於是我們讓他自己準備,我們負責提醒他考試的日期.
看到最後一次拼字考試的內容我就笑出來了! (請直著唸)
學期結束後幾天,收到學校寄來的 report card.
He is doing well. That has been shown on his report cards. Even his Spanish was rated "Excellent".
(His Spanish was rated "averaged" on the 1st report card at the end of last semester.)
令我比較驚訝的是,老師居然在 report card 上特別寫給媽媽一段勉勵的話.
"The time that you have spent reading to Bennett and enabling him to read is so valuable.
It doubles the value of anything I can do. Thank you for your work with him and keep up
the good work! Summer is a great time to chill out with a good book!"
老師對他的評語.
"I am very proud of all that Bennett has accomplished this year in K2. It has been
truly amazing to watch him mature and develop a strong academic foundation that
will take him far in the first grade. Bennett has a confident personality and I will
miss his thoughtful contributions, wonderful smile and eagerness to learn."
隨著暑假的到來,半年來的校外音樂課也到了尾聲.
這個音樂課很特別,每週老師帶一種樂器到班上讓孩子們認識樂器和它的聲音.
授課的是一個非常 children friendly 的黑人老師 Mr. Ed. 我們都非常喜歡他.
暑假過後等小男孩滿六歲後也許會開始學習特定樂器.
我們請音樂教室評估他是否適合一對一的樂器教學.音樂教室的人員徵詢 Mr. Ed 的意見後回答我.
"While talking to Mr. Ed he believes, although Bennett truly enjoys the interaction
with the other children, he is ready for private lessons. He finds him to be a very
bright, eager student who seems to thrive on learning."
另外小朋友三週前已經開始學習口琴,
我們透過音樂教室找了位樂團裡的藍調口琴手每週來家裡敎他口琴.
口琴手原本有些介意小朋友的年紀,他似乎只敎八歲以上的小孩.
經過幾次課程後這位爺爺級的口琴手告訴我們他是真喜歡口琴呢!
小朋友遇到的每位老師都不約而同地提到小朋友喜愛學習的熱忱.
我得小心守護這些小小的火燄,永遠別讓它熄.
